This afternoon, North Shields take on Northallerton Town in the EBAC Northern League Division One. After a strong showing in our 2-0 win over Newcastle Benfield on Wednesday, Brian Smith‘s side have two wins on the bounce and are starting to gain a bit of momentum.
Northallerton’s Struggles?
Northallerton have found themselves in 17th position, after only winning two games since the start of the campaign. Northallerton have fallen to tough opposition, such as Bishop Auckland & Shildon, but it is not all doom and gloom, as Town have had some very good results.
Their last game was a draw against Birtley Town, a team in which us Robins know all too well from our 6-3 blockbuster defeat in DH3.
Northallerton have also picked up results when it mattered. Although a win early in the season against Thornaby suggested that Town were punching above their weight, they have also managed to get results from the teams rivalling them at the bottom of the table.
A 5-1 loss to Penrith aside, Northallerton toppled our last opponents Newcastle Benfield 2-1, and have grinded draws against our arch-rivals Whitley Bay, as well as Horden and as mentioned before, Birtley.
Robins’ New Groove?
After a mixed start to the season for Shields, we now have two wins in a row, and are starting to gain some consistency. You would have to argue that today’s affair seems like a very favourable matchup for Brian Smith’s side to make that three.
The Robins played the perfect game against Benfield, keeping a clean sheet for only the second time this season and scoring the second goal to kill the game.
The only other clean sheet we have kept this year is against today’s challengers.
Last time out, captain Adam Forster got himself on the scoresheet for the first time this season, while Dan Wilson also found the net from a penalty.
