Match Preview: The Robins take on Newcastle Benfield at home (League MW12)

After a Ben Sampson brace, and goals from Nelson Ogbewe and Dan Wilson cemented our payback victory against Horden last Saturday, we look ahead to Wednesday night‘s clash with Newcastle Benfield.

Benfield’s Struggles?

Newcastle Benfield have had a rough time in the EBAC Northern League this season. Despite finishing in the middle of the pack last time out, the rise in competitiveness this season has seen Benfield win only one of their games in the league so far.

If it weren’t for the dissolving of Boro Rangers, Benfield would be at the bottom of the table.

In their last game, Andrew Ferguson‘s side were well beaten by promotion favourites Newton Aycliffe 4-0. That makes it a six game losing streak for the Lions coming into tonight’s matchup, and that has also left them without a win in the league since August 1st.

What’s At Stake?

This would be a huge three points for both sides, as Benfield need a win in the hope of gaining some momentum before the Christmas rush.

You would have to think that the Lions could be in real trouble, and are currently nailed on for relegation if they cannot pick up some good results sooner rather than later.

North Shields are in danger of being lost in the middle of the table, and need to start building more consistent results home and away.

This looks to be a great opportunity for us to build on last weekend’s win over Horden, and get some momentum to go on a run of positive results.

Are The Robins Back To Winning Ways?

Last weekend, the Robins scored a 4-2 win over Horden, which was a response to the 4-1 thrashing Shields received away from home on August 18th.

North Shields have been far too inconsistent this season, and have failed to string together results, instead opting for the win-loss-win pattern.

In the grand scheme of things, two wins in four with a draw sandwiched in the middle is not considered bad form for Brian Smith‘s side. However Shields are unpredictable when it comes to results.

Beating a decent Penrith side 6-1, and then losing 6-3 to Birtley Town a mere two days later is the best example of the inconsistencies with the team this season, and it is a focus point to knuckle down on, if the Robins hope to calm down and steady the ship.
