North Shields 1-0 Redcar Town
Report by: Flynn Croucher
North Shields snatched all three points in the dying seconds as they beat Redcar Town 1-0 under the lights at the Daren Persson Stadium.
The game got off to a quick start, with the visitors being the first to go close. In the sixth minute, Callum Elliott produced a superb double save, with the pick of the two being an excellent stop to deny Redcar’s Robinson-Coley. Shields responded instantly at the other end as Lee Mason’s low, goal-bound shot was saved by Will Cowey.
Just two minutes later, an excellent ball into the centre from Jordan Lashley found Nelson Ogbewe, whose volley was saved by Cowey.
The Robins kept pushing for the opener, but saw their next three successive shots saved or fired wide.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock before half-time. In the 37th minute, a foul on Redcar’s McCorie Carmichael gave the visitors a free kick in a dangerous position. The resulting set piece from Mustapha Abdullahi forced a great save from Elliott to keep the scores level. Shields had the next big chance in the 45th minute, when a great run by Lashley was ended with an effort towards goal, but Cowey produced another outstanding stop to deny him.
Half-time: North Shields 0-0 Redcar Town
The second half took time to get going, with neither side creating any clear-cut openings.
The tension of the game then escalated. In the 71st minute, a promising free kick for Redcar was crossed in and cleared only as far as the edge of the box, where Harry Thompson’s long-range effort forced yet another great save from Elliott.
The best chance of the game so far came Shields’ way in the 80th minute. A ball flicked on by substitute Stephen Hall found Ogbewe on the left, and his dangerous cross across the face of goal was put over the bar by Lashley from just yards out.
Great chances kept coming the way of the Robins. In the second minute of a total three added on, Lashley did brilliantly to beat his man and put him on the deck before passing to Ryan Carr. With just the keeper to beat, Carr blazed his shot over the bar.
With the game seemingly destined to end as a draw, the Robins found their winner in the last minute of additional time. An inspiring run from substitute Ben Sampson down the left ended with a pinpoint cross, which was met by the head of fellow substitute Dan Wilson. His header struck the inside of the post and hit the back of the net, sending the Daren Persson Stadium into pandemonium.
