It is finally the day you have all been waiting for…
North Shields’ FA Vase campaign opener has finally come around!
We start this campaign in the second round, due to our stellar performance in the competition last year. This meant that that today is our first game in the Vase this season, and we welcome Brigg Town to the Daren Persson Stadium.
Brigg Town are a team from the small village of Brigg in Lincolnshire, and they play in the Northern Counties East Division One.
Stellar Form:
Although a step six side, which is on par with a Northern League Division Two team, Brigg’s form is not one to scoff at.
In 16 league matches this season, the Zebras have won 12, while only losing one match away to Wombwell Town on 1st August. Apart from their sound exit in the Lincolnshire Trophy, they have dominated in matches and are not a team to be looked down on.
Their last league match was a 0-0 draw at home to Selby Town, but it is hard to ignore their 8-0 thrashing of Kinsley Boys Club the week prior.
A hattrick from danger man Josh Batty, who is second in the scoring race on a cool 11 goals. It is looking to be goals galore at the Daren Persson Stadium this afternoon.
Robins Comeback?
The FA Vase is a competition that has been kind to North Shields over the years. From finalists in 2009, to winners in 2015, last year’s fifth round exit was another successful cup run for the Robins.
Shields have started to slip in the league, only getting one point out of our last three matches, after going on a nine game unbeaten streak.
Our last outing was a bitter pill to swallow, the wrong side of an eight-goal thriller at the hands of Thornaby. North Shields were well beaten 6-2, and did not look like the free-flowing side that had won seven games in a row not too long ago.
No doubt among supporters that the FA Vase is a perfect opportunity for Brian Smith’s side to shake off the cobwebs and finally get back to winning ways.
We need your support more than ever, so come on down and support the lads as they kickstart their campaign in the FA Vase.
